The Karuma (600MW) hydro Power project has registered yet another milestone – the installation of the radial gates at the dam section. This installation commenced on the morning of 26th January, 2018 according to Mr. Deng Changyi – Acting project Manager, Sinohydro Corporation the project contractor.
The spillway of Karuma hydropower station is designed (with) 9 radial gates, whose main function is to control orifice flow, undertake blocking main water, and can be opened and closed during flood conditions to prevent overtopping of the dam. Each of these gates has a height of 9metres, 10metres wide, and weighs 54 tonnes. Despite this huge size and heavy weight, these gates are designed to flip and hold a huge resistance to water pressure. Mr. Deng, confirmed that the installation of all the gates was done successfully and within the agreed project timelines.
Commenced in 2013, Karuma Hydro power project was scheduled for a 60 months construction period. Today, it’s crossed the 50th month mark and is expected to be commissioned in December this year. By the end of January 2018, the overall progress of physical works (civil, hydro-mechanical and electrical-mechanical) at Karuma HPP was
about 74%. Concrete works for dam blocks #1 to #16 are practically completed paving way for the installation of spillway sections at blocks #1, #2 and #3. At the intake, work progress is at 95% with concrete casting nearing completion. Installation of Hydro-mechanical equipment for gates at intake block 1 and back filling are the main activities currently on-going.
To ensure quality is not compromised at this project, a team consisting of UEGCL, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the supervising engineer Energy infratech Pyt Limited (EIPL) and the contractor Sinohydro left for China earlier in January to conduct Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) on the following equipment; Intake maintenance gates, Outfall maintenance gates, spillway stop logs, Generator Step Up Transformer, Intake trash rack gantry crane among other equipment. Upon successful completion of these tests shall this equipment be shipped to site for installation.
The 600 Megawatt Project is financed partly by China’s Exim Bank and the government of Uganda at 85% and 15% respectively. The total cost of the project is USD 1.7 billion catering for the generation and transmission components at USD 1.3 billion and USD 400 million respectively. There will be three transmission lines to evacuate the Karuma Power; the longest being Karuma-Kawanda, Karuma- Lira and Karuma-Olwiyo. Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited UETCL is implementing the transmission component of the project.

Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, and Arsenal Football Club, have announced a new sponsorship deal. The sponsorship, the largest ever signed by the club and one of the biggest ever agreed in football, grants the airline a 5-year extension to their shirt partnership with the Club until the end of the 2023-2024 season.
The new sponsorship agreement, strengthens one of the most recognizable and respected partnerships in sport. The agreement was formally finalized by Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis and Emirates President, Sir Tim Clark on Monday.
Mr. Gazidis said: “Our shirt partnership is the longest running in the Premier League and one of the longest relationships in world sport. This mutual commitment is testimony to the strength and depth of our unique relationship. Emirates are again demonstrating their great belief in our approach and ambition and their significantly increased investment will help us continue to compete for trophies and bring more success to the club and our fans around the world.
“Emirates is a great partner for Arsenal – a world class brand with a truly global reach. The airline plays a significant role in our ambitions to extend our influence and following around the world. The new deal, extending our shirt partnership until 2024, underlines how much both organizations value and benefit from the relationship.”
In addition to being shirt sponsors, with the Emirates brand continuing to appear on Arsenal’s playing and training kits, Emirates will provide access to their award winning planes for Arsenal to use on pre-season tours. Emirates will retain marketing rights to develop campaigns and initiatives around the world. Arsenal’s home will continue to be known as Emirates Stadium up to 2028, as part of the extension agreed in 2012.
Emirates President, Sir Tim Clark, said: “Arsenal’s strong appeal and influence around the globe, combined with their ambitions as a Club makes them an ideal partner for Emirates, with values that reflect ours as a brand. As a long-standing supporter of football, we are passionate about the game and are a proud partner to the team.
“As a business, we are hugely committed to supporting sports all over the world and our relationship with Arsenal is no different. Our partnership with Arsenal Football Club is a great combination of two truly global brands and we’re very pleased to have extended this relationship for five more years – connecting fans from around the world with one
of the greatest teams in the world.”
Emirates’ shirt partnership began in the 2006/2007 season, and this extension means that Emirates branding will remain on the shirt of all Arsenal teams for at least 18 years.
MTN Uganda has revised data rates to continue the drive towards ensuring offering affordable internet to Ugandans. The reduction in data is expected to drive further internet connectivity, facilitate business growth and enable communication through internet-based channels.
The rate reduction, according to Wim Vanhelleputte the MTN Uganda CEO is an indication that as uptake and internet usage continues to grow, the internet rates will also continue to fall. “What we are currently witnessing is data revolution coming into full swing. The reduction in pricing is by over 100%, indicating our commitment towards internet connectivity and affordability for all,” he said.
The revised data bundles are not just price based but also include increased volumes for a lower price. For instance, the lower data bundle threshold has been increased to 15MBs from 10MB at a price of Shs250. For Shs5000, a customer would get 325MB but with the new rates, a customer gets 1GB for that price. This is more value for the customer at the same price.
For Shs100,000, you can now get Shs30GB for a month. In the old rates, a customer had to pay Shs285,000 to get 30GB.
“It is important that our customers not only get lower rates, but also experience a good quality network – where we are keen to continuously invest; everywhere. MTN Uganda over a two year period of 2017 and 2018 has budgeted over Ugshs 400 Billion invested in network upgrades in order to improve customer experience. This will increase our 3G sites and 4G/LTE sites to deliver a bold digital world to our customers,” he added.
According to Wim, MTN Uganda’s planned investment will upgrade the network in order to ensuring quality, good coverage and better experience. Further investment in the network also means the internet speeds continue to improve, which will facilitate business growth and innovation.
“In the world right now, the internet is driving innovation to unprecedented levels. We are seeing this in our numbers and data continues to be one of the fastest growing sources of revenue and subscriptions for MTN Uganda. We expect this trend to continue,” Wim pointed out.

Unplugged, the leading live music platform in Kampala has hosted a single artist or group since it started in November in 2017. This is about to change as Liquid Silk Naalya plans to host two acts on the same stage this Wednesday.
Nutty Neithan and Latinum, will grace the Unplugged Sn 2 stage this Wednesday in what is being dubbed Unplugged Sn 2 – Double trouble. Afrigo Band, Bebe Cool, Chameleone, Cindy and most recently Myko Ouma are some of the acts who have enchanted fans in the upscale Naalya-based club.
The introduction of two acts on the same stage is definitely a departure from this norm, and it appears to be an attempt by the management of Liquid Silk to add flavour to Unplugged.
Nutty Neithan who has built a trademark with his blue tinted hair is popular for tracks like “Bakuwe Kyonywa”, “Binkubye,“ “Walk To Work” as well as ”Follow My Rules,“ – a collaboration with Mun G.
Similarly, Latinum who finished S.6 only last year is equally a formidable artist. The young talent who is know for his distinct dancehall voice is popular among the young audience for tracks like “Ova Kampala,” “Baabo,” “Man Away,” “Some Mi Want” and “Amanya Gange”
Since this is going to be the first Double trouble edition, there is a lot of anxiety.
